Seoul’s big winter festival is announced for 2026–27, and it ends on January 31, 2027 on every official page we found. The start date, however, is not the same everywhere. So instead of promising dates, this guide anchors on something that will not change: where each event is and which subway line gets you there.

📌 Start date differs by source. The City’s March 2026 press release says December 4. The city festival portal says December 11. The City’s annual events page says December 14 (its caption says December 12). Dates for individual events (rink, market, lanterns) are not announced yet. Check the festival portal before you book.
📋 The short answer
✓ Rink, market, lanterns and the media-facade show → stay near City Hall or Gwanghwamun (Lines 1, 2 and 5)
✓ New Year’s Eve bell ringing at Bosingak → Jonggak (Line 1, Exit 4)
✓ DDP light show and Christmas town → Dongdaemun History & Culture Park (Lines 2, 4, 5)
✓ Department-store lights and shopping → Myeongdong (Line 4)

What the official pages list for 2026–27

The City describes a winter festival focused on light and media art, across the Han River, Gwanghwamun Square, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Seoul Plaza, Bosingak Pavilion and DDP. The festival portal names these programs:

ProgramWhere
Seoul Light Gwanghwamun (media facade)Gwanghwamun Square
Gwanghwamun Market (small-business booths, photo zones, free activities)Gwanghwamun Square
Seoul Lantern FestivalCheonggyecheon
Seoul Light DDP (media facade and “Christmas town”), SeoulConDDP
New Year’s Eve bell ringingBosingak (Jonggak)
Seoul Plaza ice rinkSeoul Plaza (City Hall)

Admission is not stated for most of these on the pages we opened. The City’s annual events page says admission “starts at KRW 1,000” for 2026 pricing without saying which event.

The Seoul Plaza ice rink (last season’s details)

The 2026–27 rink details are not announced. For reference, last season (Dec 19, 2025 to Feb 8, 2026) the rink ran Sunday to Friday 10:00–21:30 and Saturday and holidays 10:00–23:00. It charged KRW 1,000 per one-hour session with skates and helmet included, with 300 slots per session, half bookable online and half on site. Treat these as last year’s numbers.

🥶

How cold is it?

Seoul’s monthly averages from the Korea Meteorological Administration’s 1991–2020 normals, as reproduced on Wikipedia: December about 0.2 °C (average high 4.2, low −3.4), January about −2.0 °C (high 2.1, low −5.5), February about 0.7 °C (high 5.1, low −3.2). Plan for warm layers and gloves for evening events. We read these numbers on the Wikipedia copy, not on the KMA site.

✅

Bottom line

First winter trip, want everything near each other → City Hall or Gwanghwamun. New Year’s Eve bell → Jonggak. Light show and shopping → Dongdaemun (DDP) or Myeongdong. Because event dates are still moving, book a hotel with free cancellation if you can, and re-check the festival portal in late November.
